In the 1920’s, brothers Dahyabhai V Patel and Raojibhai V Patel arrived in Fiji from Dharmaj (Gujarat State) in India. In 1926, they established a grocery business called D.V.Patel & Sons in the rural community of Korovuto, Ba Town. In 1960, Raojibhai and Manubhai established a Grocery and Hardware business named R. C. Manubhai & Company on Ganga Singh Street, Ba Town. Thereafter, Ramanbhai and Chandrakant Patel also joined the business. The shop was eventually moved into the company’s new premises at Ba Market Sub-Division in 1969 where the company still maintains its head office. The Korovuto store was closed down in late 1970’s and Jayantibhai joined the family business.
In the mid 1980’s, the family decided to move out of the very competitive grocery business and concentrate more in Hardware, Building Materials, Structural Steel and Engineering supplies to cater for the increasing demand from the Construction, Sugar Milling, Mining, Engineering and Utilities sectors.
From disastrous fires in the earlier years of establishment to devastating hurricanes, cyclones and floods, and the negative effects of the various coups, the company’s vision and progress never stopped. Boasting from a single outlet, the company today has nine major retail outlets Fiji-wide. Of course, this would not have been possible without the solid foundation laid down by the founders mentioned above.
